Navy Rifle Opens Season With 6,112-6,044 Victory at Norwich
NORTHFIELD, Vt. ** The Navy rifle team (1-0) opened up the 2001-02 campaign
with a 6,112-6,044 road victory at Norwich late Saturday night.
Senior Bill Tolson (Oak Harbor, Wash.) scored a match-high 1,160 points in
smallbore competion, as the Midshipmen outscored the Cadets in the
discipline, 4,589-4,530. Tolson, team captain Luke Shank (Sr./Fort Wayne,
Ind.) (1,157 points), David Bachta (Sr./Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Matthew
Walters (Sr./Allentown, Pa.) combined to shoot the 10th-best smallbore score
in the nation to date.
Though not counting towards Navy's four-member team score, Mike Miller
(Fr./Albuquerque, N.M.) shot one of the best freshman smallbore scores to
date nationally, scoring 1,150 points.
Navy also shot the 11th-highest team score in the air rifle discipline,
outshooting the hosts by a 1,523-1,514 count. Marta Jung (So./Reno, Nev.)
was the match's top shooter, posting a score of 389. Also counting towards
the team score for Navy was Shank, Bachta and James Kauber (Jr./Burlington,
Wash.).
"Overall, we did a good job," said Navy third-year head coach Bill Kelley,
who's squad travels to Ohio Nov. 10-11 for matches at Akron and Ohio State,
respectively. "We are a little behind where I would expect to be at this
stage, but we have a week to prepare for our Ohio trip."

Palmer, Hibbard lead BSC Rifle to home Invite win
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Janet Palmer's career-high 377 tied teammate Sarah
Hibbard and the Birmingham-Southern rifle team defeated Texas Christian,
Mercer and UAB in the first-ever BSC Rifle Invitational Saturday
afternoon. Palmer's 21 total bull's eyes broke the scoring tie as she
finished first among collegiate gunners. Chilton County 4-H's Casey
Phillips had the tournament's best score of 379. Palmer had not fired a
gun prior to joining the BSC rifle team this fall.
Rifle meets are normally mixed between collegiate teams, high school
squads and club teams. College results, however, only count against
fellow collegiate shooters.
Birmingham-Southern's team total of 1463 was their second highest of the
season and moved the team's overall record to 11-5. Daphne Crawford
followed Palmer and Hibbard with a 364 while Lora Vaughn shot a 345. The
two other Panthers marksmen, whose scores did not count as part of the
team total, but who shot as individuals, fired impressive rounds as
well. Kate Peinhardt's 346 was a career best while April Speanburg's 324
was one off her best round.
Texas Christian's Purple squad finished second in the meet with a 1435
team finish. Leticia Marquez's 363 led the way for the Horned Frogs
while Stacy Phillips was just one off at 362. Robbie Teft of Mercer
finished fourth overall and third in collegiate standings with a 367.
The Bears' 1337 total placed them third in team standings. UAB's highest
finisher was Carrie Underwood, who shot a 331 and finished 17th overall
and 15th among college marksmen.
Chilton County's 4-H shooters, who consisted of Phillips and Nikita
Dees, both finished in the top eight individually.
