NCAA Championships
West Point, NY Mar 12, 2003
Smallbore:
1.Matt Emmons, UAF 1191
2. Bradley Wheeldon, UK 1183
3. Jamie Beyerle 1182
Air Rifle:
Jamie Beyerle, UAF 395
Per Sandberg, UAF 394
Bradley Wheeldon, UAF 393

The 2002/2003 season has reached the end  and there are many teams out there that want to compete at the NCAA Championships in March.

The main favorites for this season is University of Alaska Fairbanks with World Champion Matt Emmons as their main shooter followed with several other National Team shooters. The depth of the team will make it hard for any other team to beat them overall, but as we saw last year - they can be beaten in both individual and some team events. In the first half of the season we saw the UAF team struggle in air while they are very dominant in smallbore. This will make it close to impossible for any other team to claim the overall victory in March, but the air rifle title is wide open.

There are many good shooters for the individual events this year. In air rifle there are last year's champion Ryan Tanoue, Reno, UAF's Beyerle, Sandberg and Emmons, UK's Wheeldon, MSU's Hicks  and a large group of shooters that can shoot in the mid 390's. In smallbore, I think that Emmons will be the standout this year considering his success on the 50 meter range this summer. No other shooter should be able to shoot consistently over 1190. There are several shooters that can beat him though at individual matches. Among others are Jamie Beyerle, UAF,  Hannah Kerr, Xavier, several shooters from Kentucky and UAF, Morgan Hicks, MSU plus many other shooters that can shoot in the high 1170's.

The NCAA qualifier is finally over and there were no real surprises in the top. UAF won both events with West Virgina as second in smallbore while Xavier claimed second in air rifle. WVU will not be able to compete for the national championship as they did not qualify in the air rifle event.

For the Championships everything seems to be a UAF event. None of the other teams has the strength and depth to be able to match UAF in the smallbore event and the scores shot by UAF in the air rifle events makesit hard for the other teams to beat them unless they have a really bad day. They are too dominant in smallbore for any other team to be close, so it should be just another championship ring for the the UAF shooters,

In the individual amounts there are several shooters that can give the two dominating shooters this year - Senior Matt Emmons and Freshman Jamie Beyerle from UAF. Nicole Allaire has been shooting some great scores lately in smallbore while last years National Champion Ryan Tanoue from UNR has had a strong season and very well could win another championship. There are several other shooters that can shoot in the mid 390's air rifle that can become contenders if the top shooters don't perform as well.

In smallbore the top two can be challenged by a few other UAF shooters - Sandberg, Hein, Olsson, Wallace. But if either Jamie or Matt shoots around 1190, the championship will be decided between the two.

My prediction for the 2003 NCAA Championship is that UAF wins the smallbore and air rifle team evens with 4720 - 1567. The smallbore individual event will probably be won by Emmons as he has more experience than Beyerle and I would think the scores will be in the high 1180's - 1188/1189. In the air rifle event, I think it will be a close call between Emmons/Beyerle/Tanoue and I could very well see a tie with a 398 between two of the shooters.
